About the role
The agent runtime is the substrate behind everything Apex ships. Long-running processes, deterministic memory, capability-gated tool use, eval-gated blue/green deploys, immutable audit trace. It is the infrastructure that turns an agent from a notebook into a service.
This role is the most senior on the platform team and owns the runtime end-to-end.
What you'll do
- Set the technical direction for the agent runtime across multiple releases.
- Own the architecture trade-offs — what is in the runtime vs. what is in the agent, where the policy layer sits, how memory and provenance integrate with the rest of the system.
- Lead the platform engineering team across 6–10 engineers.
- Co-author the platform-architecture papers and represent the work externally.
Who we're looking for
- Shipped distributed-systems infrastructure at meaningful scale. You have run a stateful, multi-tenant production system through at least one full release cycle.
- Strong opinions on observability, durability, recoverability. You have written postmortems and you know what makes them useful.
- Comfortable with the trade-offs between correctness and operational simplicity.
Bonus
- Prior experience with agent frameworks at production scale.
- Background in security-engineering or trust-and-safety infrastructure.
